Fantasmic nighttime show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios – What you need to know

You may hear lots of people recommending this nighttime show at Hollywood Studios and telling you that you need to see it.  But what is it?  Are they saying it wrong and it’s  Fantastic?  No… they keep saying Fantasmic – and that is just more confusing!  Don’t worry, I’m here to help.

So… what is Fantasmic?

Fantasmic is a 29-minute outdoor nighttime “musical” of sorts featuring pyrotechnics, water effects, and projections.  It has music and songs from many different Disney films that you will recognize.  The story of the show is taking you inside Mickey’s Dream that quickly turns in to a nightmare when the villains take over!

Throughout the performance, you’ll see:

– Water screens projecting iconic Disney scenes

– Live-action performances by skilled actors and acrobats

– Appearances by many Disney characters

– Special effects, including fire, lasers, and fireworks

But here’s the thing – is it scary?

My opinion – it can be scary for the little ones.  This is a Disney show and of course there is a happy ending – but the evil battle in the middle can be loud and dark for some.  My advice if you have little ones is to sit further back in the theatre if you can.  That way you are a bit more ‘removed’ from the show and have a crowd separating your little one from the events.  You’ll still have great viewing, but you can also easily leave or just step out to the restroom if you need to.

Fantasmic Princesses

Fantasmic has a pretty impressive cast of Disney characters and live performers including:

– Mickey Mouse (the star of the show who appears also as Sorcerer Mickey)

– Maleficent (in dragon form – this is an incredible thing to see!)

– Ariel (the Little Mermaid) and Prince Eric

– Belle and the Beast

– Aladdin and Jasmine

– Snow White and some of the Seven Dwarfs

– Various Disney villains including the Evil Queen

– Some of your favorites from the Lion King, Moana, Frozen 2 and more!

Fantasmic Entrance Tower of Terror

Fantasmic Seating:

Standard Seating is first-come first-served in the amphitheater.  The entrance is at the end of Sunset Boulevard just on the right side if you’re heading towards the Tower of Terror.  For your pick of the best seats, you’ll want to arrive for the show early (90 minutes)  It is bench seating in the amphitheater so be prepared to slide all the way along and not get to ‘choose your spot’ or row.  The cast members will direct you in sections as the crowd comes in to fill in all available spots, so make sure your entire party is together when you enter.

Fantasmic Seating Area

The amphitheater curves around the lagoon where the show is, so wherever you’re seated you will be able to see it, but the middle section will have you facing the main stage head on.  Keep in mind the first couple of rows close to the lagoon may get wet.

Also important to note that there is reserved spots at the back of the viewing area to accommodate wheelchairs and ECVs.  Strollers are not permitted and there is stroller parking on the way IN to the theatre.

Pro Tips for Making the Most of Fantasmic

Fantasmic Show Times

1. Arrive Early: Even with reserved seating, arrive at least 30 minutes before showtime to get settled.  Sometimes you’ll see long lines before the show just to get in

2. Check the Schedule:  The show time can vary, so confirm the schedule on the app the day of your visit.  It can also be delayed or cancelled due to inclement weather, check the app for updates.

3. If there are 2 shows that evening, the later one will be a little quieter, but it will also mean the park will be closed when you’re done.

4. Dress Appropriately: Evenings can be really cool depending on the time of year, bring a light jacket or sweater.

5. Camera Ready: Bring a camera to capture the magical moments, but enjoy the show with your own eyes too!

6. Plan Your Exit: Know which way you’re going to leave the theatre and keep your party together.  OR you wait for the theatre to clear out a little before attempting to leave.  If you are the final show of the night it will be as the park closes and you’ll be ushered out to the front.

Why Fantasmic is a Must-See

I have a soft spot for this show personally, my Mum loved it.  There were nights where she would insist that we watch before leaving the park, she loved it.

Fantasmic Finale

Fantasmic is such a ‘feel good’ story.  Good vs evil is always a crowd pleaser, but this one is just so triumphant!  It makes you feel like you can conquer anything after you see it.  It’s fun for all guest ages and is the perfect way to cap off a night at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
